Nothing to Distract From the Build

An ornate chair can lean on its decoration. A simple one can’t, which is exactly why it’s harder to build well. With no carving or applied trim to draw the eye, every line has to be right and every joint has to be clean, because there’s nothing on the surface to distract from either.

That’s the quiet confidence of a mission chair. It’s a design that bets everything on proportion and construction instead of ornament, and when it’s built properly, the restraint reads as quality rather than plainness. Simple done right is the harder thing to pull off, and it’s the thing that still looks right in twenty years.

The Work You Can’t See

Our vintage simple chair takes longer to build than it looks like it should, and the reason is underneath the surface. The mortise-and-tenon joints are cut to fit, the back pieces are steam-bent into their curve, and corner blocks are fitted to anchor the seat to the frame. None of that shows on a finished chair, which is the point of doing it.

A craftsman in Ohio or Indiana does all of it by hand before the chair is stained and finished in your color. If you need it sooner, some configurations qualify for Quick Ship, and a call will tell you which.

Wood, Leather, or Fabric

The seat is the one real decision on this chair. A wood seat is the most durable and the easiest to wipe clean, which is why it’s standard. Leather and fabric add cushion for longer sits at the table.

Tell us how the chairs will be used and we’ll help you choose, then send a sample so you can see the wood and the seat before you commit. You get one of us on the phone, not a script.

BUILT TO BE KEPT

A Chair That Earns Its Place for Decades

A dining chair is used harder than almost anything in the house and replaced more often than it should be, usually because it was built to a price rather than to last. This one is built the other way. Mortise-and-tenon joints and a solid hardwood frame are what let a chair take decades of being pulled out, sat in, and leaned back on without working loose.

That’s what you’re paying for on a chair this plain. Not a louder look, but a chair that’s still steady under someone at the table long after a cheaper one has started to wobble and been thrown out. It’s the plain chair you buy once instead of the fancy one you buy twice.
