Rustic cherry arrives pale and faintly pink, then years of daylight deepen it into a reddish brown no stain can imitate. That’s because the wood is doing that work and not the finish.

Walnut is chocolate brown from the first day and mellows lighter as it ages. Because its sapwood runs so much paler than its heartwood, both live edges read almost blond against the top.

Wormy maple carries gray and blue halos left by ambrosia beetles in the standing tree, permanent and purely cosmetic. Whichever you choose, we mail a sample on that actual wood before a single board is cut.

When your order reaches Ohio or Indiana, someone walks out to the lumber and starts choosing. He picks the two ends that will become yours, matches the grain across the top, cuts it to your length, and finishes it in the color you approved.

Ten to sixteen weeks later, and your table is done.

That's the arithmetic of one person building one table rather than a line building a thousand, and the Amish families who do this work have been doing it for generations. They've never been in a hurry, which is the entire reason the table outlasts you.

Living With an Amish Live Edge Dining Table

Solid wood moves. It takes on moisture in August and gives it back in January, and it does that quietly as long as the room sits between 35 and 55% humidity. That is roughly where people are comfortable anyway, so you won’t have to worry about it.

Past that, the routine is a damp microfiber cloth and Guardsman products when you want the luster back. That's the whole thing. Wipe it down, live your life, and hand it to your kids.
