                Everything starts with a tape measure. Measure from the floor to the top of your counter or bar, subtract about ten to twelve inches for legroom, and that is your seat height. A standard counter usually takes a counter-height stool and a raised island or bar takes a taller one, though the measurement should decide it over the label.

                Then decide how they sit. A swivel turns to face the room and makes getting on and off easier, while a stationary stool sits quietly under the overhang. Backless stools tuck fully out of the way, and stools with backs are the call if anyone lingers over coffee. Leave about a foot of clearance between seats so no elbows collide.
